L'époque de John Sell Cotman est celle des grandes listes d'aquarelles anglaises. Déjà à un jeune âge, l'artiste issu de milieux aisés a étudié les bases de l'aquarelle. Il a attiré les artistes dans la nature de sa patrie et, localement, les peintures de paysage translucides avec leurs transitions fluides ont été créées. Cotman n'était pas exclusivement un artiste, il a également été professeur toute sa vie et a développé la peinture de paysage romantique avec ses reflets de lumière.
Contrairement à ses collègues Joseph Mallord William Turner et Thomas Girtin, Cotman a travaillé avec une composition d'images stricte et la délimitation de zones claires et sombres dans ses œuvres. Son œuvre "Le pont Greta" montre très clairement les approches du style populaire ultérieur, qui rappelle les gravures sur bois japonaises. La rivière Greta est un thème récurrent dans l'œuvre de Cotman entre 1803 et 1805. Lors de ses séjours d'été réguliers, il a étudié la rivière et a développé une nouvelle façon de la représenter.
John Sell Cotman avait un grand talent. Dès son plus jeune âge, il réalise une série de gravures. Sur le plan thématique, il a choisi des bâtiments architecturaux intéressants du Yorkshire historique. "Le château de Tancarville" est l'une des gravures de Cotman qui montre un grand souci du détail. John Sell Cotman laisse derrière lui un travail formidable et créatif. Au cours de sa vie, l'artiste a régulièrement exposé dans de grandes maisons et a reçu une reconnaissance artistique.
